Stoneware Griffin

Rare Stoneware Griffin, circa 17th Century

Little is known about the Griffin, but what an object! Whilst the body is one of terracotta, the firing has been high- at least 1100 degrees. Technically brilliant, given its size and weight, and beautifully hand painted finish.
The Griffin was carefully packed and transported to the workshop in Co Down.

Date

Winter 2024

Location

Baronscourt estate, Co Tyrone and workshop

Remedial conservation

Treatment involved cleaning, consolidation, remodelling, casting, bonding and retouching as original.

Stoneware Griffin

Restoration to a large and rare Stoneware Griffin. Possibly 17th Century.
Loss to one wing and 2 paws- remodelled using wax relief and plaster casts.
Minimal hand retouching to match original.
Little is known about the object- is it a Jardiniere? Have you seen something similar? If so, please get in touch, so we can update Baronscourt collection records.
