The Full Story
Hello! I’m Claire Magill, an accredited conservator with over 25 years of experience caring for historic collections. I specialise in ceramics, glass, and preventive conservation, working with museums, historic houses, and private collectors across Ireland and the UK. I’m proud to be an accredited ceramic & glass conservator affiliated to both ICON and ICRI- the only one in Ireland.

My work includes everything from delicate cleaning and consolidation to gap filling, reconstruction and retouching.
I also carry out condition surveys, documentation & reporting to ensure collections are preserved for generations to come.

Based in Northern Ireland, I work primarily from a fully equipped conservation studio, designed to meet the highest professional standards. Where appropriate, I also provide in-situ conservation, as well as freelance and onsite services nationally and internationally.
I adhere to best practice in Health & Safety and COSHH compliance, ensuring safe and responsible treatment of all objects.
The studio is built to high security specifications, (National Trust approved) featuring a full alarm system, security cameras, and secure storage facilities. It is a well-managed, purpose-designed space equipped with an extensive range of specialist conservation tools and materials, enabling precision and care for every project.

Alongside object conservation, I have over 20 years’ experience in preventive conservation and collections care, including: Collection care plans, Environmental monitoring and pest management, Condition audits and RAMS.

I’ve managed major projects such as the Mount Stewart Central Hall floor, Art installations like Artificial Sunshine at The Argory, always ensuring conservation is at the heart of every decision.

As a trainer, I share my knowledge on ceramics, glass, and collections care with teams across the heritage sector. I sit on the ICRI CPD review panel, helping shape professional standards in conservation. I’m also co-founder of the NI ICON working group.

My clients include National Trust, FE McWilliam gallery, and private collectors such as the Duke of Abercorn. Every project is approached with care, expertise, and a commitment to excellence. If you’d like to discuss an object, a project, some training needs, or advice on caring for your collection, I’d love to hear from you!
