Removal of historical light fitting for conservation, replaced with neon light art installation
The Argory, Moy, Co Tyrone
2018
Previous conservation
Between 2015 and 2019, I managed a major conservation project to safeguard this unique feature. Working in partnership with specialist metal conservators, the house team undertook the careful removal of all acetylene fittings throughout The Argory. Each piece was meticulously cleaned, conserved, and reinstated, ensuring the integrity and functionality of this historic system. In total, approximately 80 light fittings were treated during the project.
The Project
In April 2018, the impressive West Hall chandelier was removed for conservation cleaning. Rather than leave the space empty, we seized the opportunity to engage visitors in an innovative way. We commissioned a neon installation by Northern Irish artist Kevin Killen, inspired by the workings of the acetylene system and the wider story of The Argory. This creative intervention highlighted the conservation process while celebrating the house’s heritage through contemporary art.
This project exemplifies how conservation can combine technical expertise, interpretation, and creativity to protect historic features while enhancing visitor experience.
What it delivered
Removed layers of dirt and smoke, allowing the true beauty of the fittings to be fully appreciated.
Transformed the West Hall, an integral part of The Argory mansion.
Completed the restoration of the light fittings project to the highest standard.
Captured the Spirit of Place, reflecting the grandeur and display of wealth intended by the MacGeough-Bond family.
Reduced the backlog of conservation work, enhancing the CPI score.
Developed key skills in metalwork conservation among the team.
Engaged local trades (such as scaffolding), helping them understand the sensitivity and importance of building conservation.
Encouraged further fundraising and donations by showcasing effective, high-quality outcomes.

The Argory is renowned for its innovative country house technologies, each designed to make life more comfortable or tasks simpler. Among the most significant are its acetylene gas light fittings—a rare surviving example of early domestic lighting systems.
We took the opportunity to commission a neon artwork and hang it in place of the west hall light fitting, during its removal for conservation.
I led the successful delivery of the project, creating an effective interface between the Project Team and internal stakeholders, including the Project Board and Programme Director. The project was delivered on time, under budget, and with extremely positive feedback.
