Plaster sculpture

Remedial plaster conservation

September 2025
In advance of new gallery reinstatement Summer 2026

Remedial conservation

The sculpture was transported to my workshop ( access and security approved to NT standards). Collaborating with my artisan metalworker, we created and fitted a bespoke metal plate to secure and stabilise the sculpture, given it will be in open display in the new gallery. I swab cleaned, then steam cleaned the sculpture before recreating areas of loss. After consolidation I retouched as the original.

The F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio is dedicated to the memory of sculptor Frederick Edward McWilliam, one of Ireland’s most influential and successful artists.
This large plaster maquette 'Bi-Lateral relief' was in preparation for the bronze version. As part of the new gallery wing, due to open 2026, the conserved sculpture will form part of the permanent exhibition on open display
