Scagliola Columns

Central Hall, Mount Stewart

Summer 2024

In situ conservation

The conservation was carried out in the central hall so that visitors to the house could see the process. Q+A sessions were factored in for interested visitors - show casing the processes involved with cleaning, filling, sanding and retouching the columns. Visitor feedback was positive as folks enquired about how to look after similar artefacts of their own, as well as the materials and equipment involved.

Mount Stewart

The 4 scagliola columns flank the Saloon and main entrance doorways in Mount Stewarts Central hall. They act as majestic plinths to the elegant alabaster urns, converted to lamps.
The columns have suffered from substantial losses, with unsightly old repairs. So with cracks and crumbling old restorations, it was time to clean, consolidate and restore the columns to their former glory.
