Central Hall Floor
The Central Hall at Mount Stewart had been a mix of two eras: the decoration reflected the 1930s, while the floor, laid by Lady Mairi Bury in the 1970s and replaced by the National Trust in 2006, was a much later addition, covering the historic Scrabo stone floor beneath.
To complete the restoration of the room to the era of Edith, Lady Londonderry, the period in which the rest of the house was presented, the proposal aimed to remove the modern tiling and reveal the original Scrabo flooring. This would finalise the restoration of the house and present the Central Hall as a unified space.
While restoring the floor, I included the restoration of the wooden skirting boards, and door saddles to match floor levels and the columns in the room. This included removing the discoloured varnish that had built up over time to reveal the original scheme beneath.
